Scale

Diecast Collectible by Scale

Our diecast cars and trucks come in several varying size categories referred to as scales.  The scale indicates the ratio of the size of the replica to the size of the actual vehicle the replica is based on.  Our diecast cars and trucks typically range from 1:64 scale (the smallest) to 1:18 scale (the largest).  As a general rule the larger the second number in the scale the smaller the diecast model is.  Conversely products with a smaller number in the scale are larger.

As an example let’s examine a diecast scale model car of 1958 Chevy Impala.  The real car is 209 inches long.  A 1-18 scale diecast of that car would be about 11 ½” long.  A 1:24 scale replica would be approximately 8 ½” long.  A 1-43 scale diecast of the 1958 Impala would be nearly 5” long.  And finally a 1/64 scale 1958 Chevrolet Impala would be 3 ¼” long.

Another way to determine the size of a collectible scale model car is that a 1-18 scale replica will be one inch in length for every 18 inches of the real cars length.  A 1:24 scale die cast car will be one inch in length for every 24 inches of the real car.

Sizing for collectible scale model cars can be written in a number of different formats.  For example a 1:18 scale diecast car could be written as 1:18 scale, 1 18 scale, 1-18 scale or 1/18 scale.

When Fairfield Collectibles entered the diecast segment in 1995 U.S. collectors had very limited choices in collectible diecast from Franklin Mint and Danbury Mint and only in 1:24 scale.  Fairfield Collectibles introduced die-cast collectors to larger 1:18 scale models at much more affordable prices than what had previously been available from either Franklin or Danbury.

Original 1:18 scale diecast manufactures included Ertl, Yat Ming, Maisto, Bburago, Motormax and Welly.  As Fairfield grew and expanded the 18 scale market many more manufacturers joined the fray including Motor City Classics, Sunstar, Signature, Highway 61 and GMP.

Today that segment is dominated by Acme Diecast, Greenlight Collectibles, Round 2, Shelby Collectibles, Minichamps as well as all the original manufacturers who continue the tradition of creating incredibly detailed 1:18 die-cast models.

Today Fairfield offers a huge assortment of diecast model cars and trucks in all scales and price points.  As the continued leader in the 1/18 scale diecast collector market our web site offers hundreds of large format cars with opening doors, hoods, and trunks along with functional steering wheels which turn the front wheels.  These die cast cars and trucks feature well appointed interior details with many that include precisely recreated engines and even working suspension systems

The same is true of most of the 1:24 scale diecast you will find on this web site.  We hope you enjoy your collectible scale model cars shopping experience.  We’re sure you’ll find something that brings to you back to those carefree days of your youth.  Or maybe a dream car that you’ve lusted after.  Either way you’re sure to love our breakthrough combination of service, selection and low prices that ensure you receive the greatest value anywhere!
