About the offensive
On January 12, 1945, the Red Army launched its winter offensive on either side of Warsaw, breaking the German defense of the Vistula River line within days and driving west across Poland. Leaving isolated pockets of resistance and Hitler-proclaimed "fortress" cities behind, the 1st Belorussian Front reached the Oder River within about two weeks and established several bridgeheads on its western bank. With the Oder the last major river barrier before Berlin, then roughly 60 kilometers away, German forces mobilized to defend the line and block a further Soviet advance on the capital.
