Historical Background
The Zulu Kingdom under King Cetshwayo fielded regiments known as amabutho, armed with the short stabbing spear (iklwa) and cowhide shields, and used coordinated encircling tactics such as the "horns of the buffalo" formation. Despite facing a British army equipped with rifles and artillery, Zulu forces won a notable victory at the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879, though the war ultimately ended in the defeat of the Zulu Kingdom.
