About the Book
After refitting following the Normandy campaign, the 12th SS Panzer Division took part in the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944, covering the right flank of the German advance against determined US opposition; by the end of January 1945, American reinforcements had pushed the division back to its starting positions. In early March 1945, the division was redeployed to Hungary for Operation Fruhlingserwachen, an attempt to recapture the Hungarian oilfields, before a Soviet counterattack on March 16 forced a retreat toward Vienna. On May 8, 1945, the division's roughly 10,000 remaining troops surrendered to US forces.
