By late 1983, Rick Hendrick had begun putting plans together to go racing in the 1984 NASCAR Cup Series® season. Prior to launching that inaugural season, a white No. 5 City Chevrolet test car was shaken down at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the fall of 1983. Following that initial shakedown, Geoff Bodine would go on to earn three wins during Hendrick Motorsports' first season competing in the NASCAR Cup Series®.
