About the A-10 Thunderbolt II
Introduced in 1977 and nicknamed the "Warthog," the A-10 was built by Fairchild Republic for close air support, armed with a 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger cannon for use against armored vehicles and ground troops. Its heavily armored cockpit and redundant systems are designed for survivability, and its wide, straight wings provide stability at low speeds. As the Air Force has moved to retire and reassign its A-10 fleet in recent years, Air National Guard units such as Maryland's 104th Fighter Squadron have marked the type's departure with commemorative liveries like this one.
