The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a single-seat subsonic carrier-capable light attack aircraft. Originally designated A4D it was developed by Douglas Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas) as a replacement for the propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider. Compact and lightweight the Skyhawk had a maximum takeoff weight of 24500 pounds—half that of the Navy's specification. It featured a short-span delta wing tricycle undercarriage and a single turbojet engine. The Skyhawk's five hardpoints supported various munitions and it pioneered buddy air-to-air refueling. Over 2960 were produced including 555 two-seat trainers
