About the Campaign
The North African campaign pitted German commander Erwin Rommel's Afrikakorps and Italian forces against British Commonwealth troops, and later American forces as well, across desert terrain ranging from Egypt to Tunisia. It marked the first major engagement of U.S. troops against Nazi Germany, and the men who fought there went on to lead Allied forces in later campaigns including Normandy. The campaign ended in May 1943 with the surrender of more than 200,000 German and Italian troops in Tunisia. This revised edition covers the campaign's battles, the role of intelligence and codebreaking, and reassesses Rommel's reputation as a commander.
