The Caterpillar 966A was built from 1960 through 1963, the key features including a turbocharged diesel engine, power shift transmission, "one finger" shifting controls and 2-3/4 cubic yard bucket capacity. Caterpillar's design put the lift arms and hydraulic cylinders ahead of the operator's compartment. This allowed the operator to mount and dismount the cabin more easily, kept moving parts away from the operator, and provided enhanced forward reach.
