About the Hunting Shirt
Traceable to the 1730s on the North American frontier, the hunting shirt opened down the front and, when belted, created a natural pocket for small items. Its cape and ornamental fringe were inspired by eastern woodland Indian dress. George Washington encouraged its use, writing that it carried "no small terror to the enemy," and clothed much of his army in it during the Revolutionary War.
