About Ertl

The Ertl Company was founded in 1945 by Fred Ertl Sr., a German immigrant and journeyman mold-maker who began making scale tractor models in his Dubuque, Iowa, basement by casting melted-down aluminum aircraft pistons in handmade sand molds. After securing approval to make John Deere models, the company produced its first die-cast Model A tractor in 1952, and in 1959 it moved to Dyersville, Iowa, home of the National Farm Toy Museum.

Ertl was acquired by Racing Champions in 1999, and Tomy acquired its parent company RC2 in 2011.

What Makes Ertl Collectible

Ertl is one of the best-known names in farm toys, with a long history of licensed models for John Deere, Case IH, New Holland and AGCO. Collectors often seek out special editions such as "Happy Birthday" releases and Prestige models, and the standard 1:16, 1:50 and 1:64 scales make it simple to build a matching collection.
