About the F-35B Lightning II

The F-35B is the short-takeoff/vertical-landing (STOVL) variant of Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II, designed for ground-attack and air-superiority missions from short runways and amphibious ships. The U.S. Marine Corps declared its first F-35B squadron operational on July 31, 2015. The 461st Flight Test Squadron, based at Edwards Air Force Base, is a U.S. Air Force unit responsible for developmental flight testing of the F-35 and other fighter programs.
