About the Iron Brigade
Earning its nickname shortly after the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Iron Brigade took great pride in the designation. On July 1, 1863, the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the brigade repulsed a Confederate advance through Herbst's Woods and charged through an unfinished railroad cut, capturing the flag of the 2nd Mississippi and hundreds of prisoners. On July 2-3, it helped defend the north slope of Culp's Hill, where the 6th Wisconsin made a night counterattack to retake ground lost to Confederate troops.
