Geronimo was a prominent leader and warrior of the Chiricahua Apache who resisted the expansion of the United States and Mexico into Apache homelands during the late nineteenth century. Born around 1829 in present-day Arizona he became known for his determination military skill and ability to lead small groups through the rugged mountains and deserts of the Southwest. Geronimo fought against Mexican and American forces while defending his people's independence and way of life. He and other Apache leaders repeatedly escaped capture earning reputations for their mobility and knowledge of the terrain. In 1886 Geronimo finally surrendered to U.S. forces under General Nelson Miles. He spent his remaining years as a prisoner of war and later appeared at public events. Geronimo died in 1909 in Oklahoma far from his homeland.
