About the Defection
On September 21, 1953, 21-year-old North Korean pilot Lt. No Kum-sok flew this MiG-15 from Sunan air base near Pyongyang and landed at Kimpo Air Base in South Korea, a flight of about 17 minutes. He was unaware at the time of the $100,000 reward offered under the U.S. Air Force's Operation Moolah for a MiG-15 delivered intact, which he later received. The aircraft gave American and allied engineers their first opportunity to closely examine and test-fly an intact Soviet-built MiG-15.
