About the Book

Alongside the well-known American island-hopping campaign at Okinawa, the British Pacific Fleet fought its largest carrier operation of the war against Japan, deploying five fleet carriers over two months. The Fleet Air Arm's task was to suppress Japanese airfields on the Sakashima Islands, which were used both to stage kamikaze attacks and to route aircraft from Japan to Okinawa. Konstam examines the capabilities of the late-war Fleet Air Arm and notes that the Royal Navy's armored-deck carriers proved more resilient to kamikaze strikes than the wooden-decked American carriers.
