About the P-38 Lightning
The P-38 Lightning was distinguished by its unconventional twin-boom fuselage, with two Allison V-1710 engines housed in the booms and the pilot seated in a central forward cockpit. Capable of over 400 mph and armed with four .50 caliber machine guns and a 20mm cannon, it was especially effective in the Pacific theater and for escorting long-range bombers, earning the nickname "the fork-tailed devil" from enemy pilots.
