About George Preddy and the P-51D Mustang
George Preddy took command of this aircraft, the third he named "Cripes A'Mighty," in June 1944. Flying it, he became the top-scoring P-51 Mustang ace of World War II, including six confirmed victories over German Bf 109s in a single mission on August 6, 1944. The P-51D itself was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, armed with six .50-caliber machine guns, and is best remembered for escorting Allied heavy bombers deep into German territory during daylight raids.
