About Richard Bong

Flying the P-38 Lightning in the Pacific Theater, Bong was credited with 40 aerial victories, the most of any U.S. pilot in the war. He received the Medal of Honor from General Douglas MacArthur in December 1944 and was ordered home after reaching his 40th victory. He was killed on August 6, 1945, when his Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star jet suffered an engine failure during a test flight.
