About the SBD Dauntless
Entering active service with American flight units in 1941, the SBD-3 played a decisive role at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, helping sink Japanese aircraft carriers. Powered by a Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine, it could reach roughly 255 mph, carry nearly 4,400 pounds of bombs, and was armed with two forward-firing .50-caliber and two rear-facing .30-caliber machine guns. Crews valued it for its ruggedness and solid construction.
