About the SR-71 Blackbird
The Lockheed SR-71 was a long-range, Mach 3-capable strategic reconnaissance aircraft that first flew on December 22, 1964, and still holds the record for the fastest air-breathing crewed aircraft. Only 32 SR-71s were built, and while 12 were lost in accidents over its 34-year service history, none were lost to enemy action.
