About the 442nd Regimental Combat Team
Organized in March 1943 and composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese-American (Nisei) soldiers, many of whom had family members held in wartime internment camps under Executive Order 9066, the 442nd fought throughout Italy and France, including at Anzio, and helped liberate Nazi concentration camps in Germany. The regiment earned thousands of Purple Hearts and Bronze Stars, multiple Presidential Unit Citations, and 21 Medal of Honor recipients, and it remains one of the most decorated units for its size and length of service in U.S. military history.
