About Belleau Wood
Beginning in June 1918, U.S. Marines launched repeated assaults against heavily defended German positions in the dense forest of Belleau Wood, fighting through machine-gun fire and close-quarters combat to steadily force German troops from the woods. The battle became one of the Marine Corps' defining actions of World War I.
