About the Book
Prewar naval planners envisioned submarines primarily as hunters of capital ships, though in practice they became best known as commerce raiders; hunting carriers and battleships remained an important secondary role for the US submarine force. Early attacks in 1942-43 were hampered by faulty torpedoes, poor tactics and bad luck, but between June and November 1944 US submarines sank three of Japan's largest aircraft carriers and a battleship, including Shinano, the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine, in November 1944. Afterward, Japan's remaining capital ships largely stayed in port or sheltered waters beyond submarine reach.
