Laid down in September of 1931 the USS San Francisco (CA-38) was a New Orleans-class heavy cruiser that saw extensive service during the Second World War earning an impressive 17 battle stars. She like most of her sister ships featured prominently in the Guadalcanal campaign during which she was heavily damaged and her captain and admiral killed. The San Francisco however survived the war and was decommissioned the following year in 1946.
