About the Commander-in-Chief's Guard
Formed on March 12, 1776, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Guard was tasked with protecting Washington's person, papers and the Continental Army's funds. Members were chosen for loyalty, discipline and physical fitness, and the unit is known to history for a 1776 conspiracy in which several Guard members, including a sergeant later court-martialed and executed, were implicated in a plot against Washington. The Guard remained in service until the war's end in 1783.
