The Douglas A-4D Skyhawk flown by VMA-242 Bats of the U.S. Marine Corps was a nimble carrier-capable attack jet stationed at NAS Key West during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Designed for quick-response strike missions the A-4D was compact yet powerful capable of delivering conventional or nuclear ordnance. In October 1962 VMA-242 stood on high alert ready to strike Soviet missile sites in Cuba if ordered. Painted in standard gull gray and white with squadron bat insignia the Skyhawks represented a critical component of America's tactical airpower during the standoff combining speed precision and reliability in a time of extreme tension.
