About the F-4 Phantom II
Developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the U.S. Navy and later adopted by the Air Force and Marine Corps, the twin-engine F-4 Phantom II entered service in the 1960s and became a mainstay of American airpower during the Vietnam War. Capable of speeds over Mach 2.2, it served in air superiority, ground-attack, and reconnaissance roles, and Air National Guard units such as Minnesota's 148th Fighter Interceptor Group continued flying the type into the 1980s.
