About the Campaign
In early 1942, German U-boats exploited weak Allied coastal defenses off the U.S. East Coast in what became known as the "Second Happy Time," inflicting heavy shipping losses before Admiral Karl Donitz shifted the U-boat force back to the North Atlantic. Allied advances in technology and intelligence turned the tide by May 1943, when 34 U-boats were lost in a single month, forcing a German withdrawal from the mid-Atlantic convoy routes.
