About the Battle
In late January 1968, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched a country-wide offensive across South Vietnam. On the night of January 31, four North Vietnamese battalions and supporting Viet Cong units seized both halves of Hue along the Perfume River, an ancient capital that had previously seen little fighting. US Marines and South Vietnamese forces, backed by US Army artillery, were ordered to retake the city, and more than three weeks of house-to-house urban combat followed before Hue was recaptured, at the cost of heavy casualties and extensive damage to the city.
