Yamato was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever constructed, built by Japan during World War II. Commissioned in 1941, she displaced more than 70,000 tons fully loaded and carried nine massive 46-centimeter guns, the largest naval artillery ever mounted on a warship. Designed to defeat enemy battleships, Yamato was heavily armored and could withstand tremendous damage. However, the rise of aircraft carriers and naval aviation reduced the importance of battleships during the war. Yamato spent much of her career operating as a fleet flagship and saw limited major combat. In April 1945, she was sent on a one-way mission toward Okinawa during Operation Ten-Go. Before reaching the island, American aircraft attacked and sank her. Yamato remains a powerful symbol of Japan's naval ambitions and wartime history.
