The book covers California's major Cold War-era military presence on land, air and sea, alongside the founding conference of the United Nations, held in San Francisco in 1945. It traces Muroc Field, later Edwards Air Force Base, where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947, and Lockheed's Skunk Works, which developed the U-2 and SR-71 in Southern California. It also covers Cold War-era presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, both from California, and Howard Hughes' role providing cover for the Glomar Explorer's mission to recover a sunken Soviet submarine from the Pacific. The book additionally examines Hollywood's dual role in wartime propaganda and as a focus of government investigations into Communist sympathies.
