About the Book
While the leaders of the Continental Army and French forces at Yorktown are well documented, the top commanders of the Virginia militia are less well known. Some, including Brigadier General George Weedon, Colonel James Innes and Lieutenant Colonel William Darke, were former Continental Army officers with battlefield experience; others, such as Colonel Sampson Mathews, Colonel John Page and Colonel Sir John Peyton, were civic leaders who took up arms to defend their state. Drawing on period sources and images, Heuvel traces their roles in the siege that effectively ended the Revolutionary War.
