About the Texas Brigade
Formed in 1861 and composed mainly of the 1st, 4th and 5th Texas Infantry regiments, later joined by the 18th Georgia and Hampton's South Carolina Legion, the Texas Brigade served in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under commanders including John Bell Hood. The brigade fought in major battles of the Eastern Theater, including Antietam, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. At the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864, as Confederate lines were giving way, Robert E. Lee rode forward with the brigade in a counterattack; the soldiers, unwilling to risk their commander, stopped and turned him back, an episode remembered as "Lee to the Rear."
