About the D-558-2 Skyrocket
On November 20, 1953, NACA test pilot Scott Crossfield flew the second D-558-2 Skyrocket to Mach 2.005 in a shallow dive after an air launch from a modified U.S. Navy P2B-1S (a modified B-29), becoming the first pilot to exceed twice the speed of sound. Developed by Douglas under chief engineer Edward Heinemann for the Navy and NACA, the swept-wing Skyrocket paired a jet engine for takeoff with a four-chamber rocket motor for its high-speed test runs, helping researchers understand supersonic and transonic flight.
