The Lockheed WV-2s, redesignated EC-121s in 1962, served from 1954 to 1978. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the frontiers of the American defense system during that time were patrolled by aircraft of the Airborne Early Warning Squadrons. Based in Alaska, Honolulu, Midway, and Newfoundland, the planes of these squadrons formed an around the clock airborne radar line, keeping watch for possible air invasion. They were used by both the Navy and Air Force through 1978. EC-121s were used extensively in Southeast Asia between April 1965 and June 1974, and were the forerunners of AWACS aircraft. The USN used a variant, the NC-121, in their Blue Eagle unit from 1965-1972 for television and radio broadcasting to the troops. The men of Airborne Early Warning Squadrons kept the rugged WV-2's in the air, maintaining a constant vigil, and making sure that no surprise attack would find the United States unprepared.
