About the F-22A Raptor's Public Debut
The first production F-22A Raptor, serial 91-4001 "Spirit of America," was unveiled to the public on April 9, 1997, at a rollout ceremony hosted by Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Pratt & Whitney. That October the aircraft moved to Edwards Air Force Base, California, where the 412th Test Wing led its developmental flight testing. Painted in a low-visibility gray scheme, the aircraft combined stealth shaping with supercruise capability, marking the start of flight testing for the Air Force's next air-dominance fighter.
