About the F-4 Phantom II

The F-4 Phantom II entered U.S. Navy service in late 1960 and went on to set a number of speed and altitude records, reaching a top speed of Mach 2.2 while carrying up to 18,000 pounds of weaponry. It saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War, where five F-4 crew members achieved ace status, and it was gradually replaced in U.S. service by aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle beginning in the 1980s.
