About the Frock Coat
Early in the Civil War, many Union soldiers -- especially officers and elite units -- wore the frock coat, a formal, dark-blue, knee-length wool garment with a fitted waist and brass buttons. Though it gave a distinguished appearance, the frock coat was gradually replaced in most ranks by the more practical sack coat, while it remained standard for officers throughout the war.
