About the Union Frock Coat
Early in the Civil War, many Union soldiers, particularly officers and elite units, wore frock coats, a formal, knee-length wool garment with a fitted waist. Often dark blue with brass buttons, these coats were gradually replaced in most ranks by the more practical sack coat, though frock coats remained common among officers throughout the war.
