About the Union sack coat
The sack coat was the Union Army's standard-issue jacket: a loose-fitting, dark blue wool coat with a straight cut and four brass buttons, chosen for being practical and quick to produce in large numbers. It was typically worn with sky-blue trousers, a kepi or forage cap and leather brogans, and issued alongside a rifled musket, cartridge box and bayonet.
