German Sturmtruppen (stormtroopers) were elite assault soldiers trained to infiltrate enemy defenses using speed, surprise, and decentralized tactics. Rather than advancing in dense formations, they bypassed strongpoints, targeted command posts and machine-gun positions, and disrupted communications before regular infantry followed. At Belleau Wood, they skillfully used the dense forest for concealment, establishing fortified machine-gun nests and defensive positions that slowed Allied advances. Their discipline, combat experience, and effective use of grenades, light machine guns, and trench mortars made them formidable opponents. Despite their tactical advantages, they faced determined attacks from U.S. Marines and French forces. Weeks of fierce, close-quarters fighting ultimately forced the Germans to withdraw, marking an important Allied victory during the World War I.
