About 18th-century cartridge equipment
By the mid-18th century, French infantry carried a leather cartridge box, or giberne, holding a bored wooden block and a tin tray for 30 to 32 paper cartridges, with a small tool pouch on the front flap. The buff leather straps for the cartridge box and waist belt were kept clean with pipe clay, a white powder mixed with soap and water and brushed off once dry.
