About the Semovente M42
In the late 1930s the Italian Regio Esercito began deploying self-propelled artillery on medium tank hulls, and the resulting Semovente 75/18 became one of the most effective Italian armored vehicles, its 75mm howitzer proving a capable anti-tank weapon as well as a support gun. Seeking greater offensive power, the Army fitted the 75/34 anti-tank cannon to the M42 tank hull, with the first units reaching Italian forces in spring 1943. After Italy's armistice in September 1943, examples were also used by German anti-tank units.
