About This Aircraft

When the 309th Fighter Squadron moved to support Allied operations in North Africa and on to Sicily and Italy, it flew Spitfire Mk.V fighters before receiving upgraded Mk.IX variants from April 1943, providing fighter cover for Allied bombers across the Mediterranean theater. This aircraft was flown by Lt. Robert Connor, who named it "Porky II" and had cartoon character Porky Pig painted on the fuselage, distinguishing it from an earlier Spitfire Mk.V he had named "Porky." The 309th converted to North American P-51B Mustangs in March 1944. An aircraft carrying these markings, restored and known as "The Suffolk Spitfire," remains active on the UK airshow circuit today.
