About This Aircraft

Spitfire P9443, the 606th Spitfire built, was delivered to No. 222 Squadron at RAF Hornchurch on June 4, 1940. Posted to the squadron as a flight leader, Douglas Bader flew this aircraft to score his first aerial victory, over a Messerschmitt Bf 109, on June 1, 1940, during Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk evacuation. Bader left 222 Squadron on June 28, 1940, to take command of No. 242 Squadron, which by the end of that year had shot down 67 enemy aircraft for the loss of five pilots.
