About Belleau Wood
Beginning in June 1918, U.S. Marines launched repeated assaults against entrenched German machine-gun positions in Belleau Wood, fighting through dense forest in brutal close-quarters combat with rifles, bayonets and grenades. Despite heavy casualties, they cleared the wood after weeks of fighting, helping halt the German spring offensive and boosting Allied morale.
