The Fairey Swordfish Mk.I was a British carrier-borne torpedo bomber introduced in the mid-1930s and widely used during the early years of the Second World War. A fabric-covered biplane with a sturdy metal frame, it featured folding wings for storage aboard aircraft carriers and an open cockpit for its crew of three: pilot, observer, and telegraphist-air gunner. Powered by a Bristol Pegasus radial engine, the Swordfish could carry a torpedo, depth charges, mines, or bombs, making it highly versatile. Though slow and outdated in appearance, it proved remarkably effective, most famously in the attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto and in crippling the German battleship Bismarck. Its stability at low speeds made it ideal for anti-submarine patrols and night operations throughout the war.
