The Brewster F2A Buffalo was a U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter introduced in the late 1930s as one of America's first monoplane naval fighters. Designed and built by Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, it featured an all-metal structure, retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit—modern characteristics for its time. Powered by a Wright R-1820 radial engine, the Buffalo was armed with a combination of .50 and .30 caliber machine guns. Although initially considered advanced, it quickly proved underpowered and less maneuverable than newer enemy fighters. It performed poorly in early Pacific engagements but saw more effective service with Finnish forces, who used it successfully against Soviet aircraft. Despite its mixed combat record, the Buffalo marked an important transitional step in U.S. naval fighter development.
