About the Fokker E.III Eindecker
Introduced in 1915, the Fokker E.III monoplane became famous for its synchronized machine gun, which let pilots fire directly through the spinning propeller. The advantage this gave German aviators became known as the "Fokker Scourge" and helped establish the fighter as a specialized aircraft type.
About Josef Jacobs
Josef Jacobs learned to fly in 1912 and began the war as a motorcycle dispatch rider before moving into reconnaissance and then fighters, earning a place with the newly formed Fokkerstaffel West flying the Eindecker in 1916. He went on to become Germany's fourth-highest-scoring ace of World War I with 48 victories, most of them achieved later in the war flying the Fokker Dr.I triplane, and was awarded the Pour le Merite. Jacobs remained active in aviation after the war and died in 1978.
